Dan Mirolli/Writing

Evolve what exists. A camel stays a camel.

Every rewrite starts with the same lie: this time we will get it right from scratch.

The thing you have already works. It has a shape people recognize. It carries decisions that were made for reasons nobody wrote down. Throw it out and you throw the reasons out with it.

So the rule is simple. Unless someone asks for a blank canvas, treat existing work as an evolutionary chain. Add to it. Remove from it. Keep its identity.

A camel can evolve. It stays a camel.
